I'm very happy to announce that I officially have an agent now. Just Add Water management (I mean, how perfect is that for me?) is a new agency co-founded by former creative director Kirsten Ludwig and founder/Director of ARTMIX, Bruce Kramer. This is a new agency with a new approach and feedback thus far has been incredible. Kirsten, working out of New York, brings her creative expertise to the table having worked with companies such as Anthropologie, Ralph Lauren, American Eagle and Ron Herman. I have to say, it's going to be really amazing having her involved with my shoots from concepts all the way thru to finish. Out in LA, Bruce will bring all his experience to the table as well. Bruce has been in the business a long time and his guidance and feedback has been invaluable to me already. I'm in great company... the other photographers in the JUST ADD WATER family are unbelievably talented, each with their own spin & style visible throughout their work (and all really cool people, too!).

Oh, CC Skye... where to begin?

CC & I met years ago when I shot her first campaign. We had a great time & worked well together, but we hadn't really become friends. It wasn't until recently that we formed a very close bond. I've done many shoots for her now & I've always loved the collaborations we've shared, but now I have a whole new love for her. In the last year we somehow wound up in a circle of friends that share weekly dinners somewhere in Malibu (where CC reigns Queen) or on the west side of town. Our little group is pretty eclectic, all very different, yet somehow we ALWAYS find ourselves laughing the nights away. I've always admired CC for her creative talents & her incredible business savvy. Her uncompromising loyalty as a client is pretty amazing as well. She has started a business with an idea and taken it to such great heights... only to grow more and more in the years to come. ALL of these things are impressive. BUT what I truly adore is the "real" CC... A Malibu girl that has an undeniable warmth about her, a razor sharp wit that can sometimes catch people off guard and a heart of gold. To get to know CC, to REALLY know her... is to love her. Everyone should be so lucky.

I know it's not your birthday quite yet, but since I'll be traveling when it comes around... a very, very happy birthday to you, CC. And congratulations on turning 25 again (wink, wink).

As many of you know, my room mate and best friend is comedian David E. Taylor. If you've yet to live with a stand up comic, I highly recommend it...

About two years ago I received a copy of "Fly, Rod & Reel" as well as some other bass fishing magazine. The subscription was in my name. Most of you know me as a "water" guy... I spend more time in the ocean than I do on land, but I have never gone fishing. So, you can imagine my surprise when I started to receive these publications. At first it was funny... then they just kept coming. Eventually, my comic room mate David started putting them on my pillow when they arrived. I would come home from a long week in New York, Miami or wherever, walk in my cozy room overly excited to sleep in my own bed, only to find a fishing magazine staring me in the face. Sometimes, he would hide them under my pillow and I wouldn't notice for two days (though, not so coincidentally, I would dream of "reeling in the big one"). I started to feel consumed, surrounded, nay... stalked by fish. Despite all my objections, I was slowly turning into a fisherman. On nights of boredom, I'd actually read them. I found them to be a natural alternative to Ambien. You can read one of these magazines and be sleeping like a lamb within five seconds. I still have yet to go fishing, but I can damn sure tell you how to catch that elusive bass. I have become an unwilling expert.

Recently, after having a "few too many" at our local watering hole, David finally admitted to me that he had signed me up for the subscriptions. Apparently he was incredibly bored the day the offer came in the mail. And, I mean... why wouldn't he sign me up?

In the last few weeks, I began receiving reminders that my subscription was running out soon. "Thank the fishing Gods" I thought. I will finally have peace...

Wishful thinking. I came home from my last trip to find a fresh issue on my pillow. Thank you, Dearest David... so kind of you to renew.

I know, I know... I've barely updated the blog, but the last few weeks have been pretty crazy. I've known three words lately... shoot, edit, sleep. Actually, four words... meetings. LOTS of meetings.

I went out to Captiva island for the last Delia's shoot. I swear, I'm so lucky to be working with them. Every shoot is like a party. Sure, there's work involved (sometimes lots), but it's always fun during our shoot days and at night... Oh, at night... that's when we really let loose. Dinners our filled with crying laughter & memory creations. I came home to LA so inspired, so motivated...

So, what's next? Shooting CC SKYE this week. I love collaborating with her & I'm always stoked on the outcome of our projects. And after that? There's some very big things in the works.

My roommate Dave recently came home from being on tour & we thought what better way to celebrate than head off to Sears for a Holiday card portrait sitting. Do you remember doing that as a kid? I do... I hated it! But... not this time. We were all so excited. Dave brought us some Christmas sweaters he picked up in North Dakota, very fine threads... and we were off to have photo magic done. We all decided to play roles during the photo shoot. I was the oblivious, always on the road, traveling salesman father. Dave was the overly sedated house wife & Christian was a child with a lot of issues. I think the talented people of Sears really captured this. The official Christmas card will be coming soon...

Battle with a Droid...

My brick of a cell phone finally crashed on me and yesterday I had to buy a new one. Too tired to fight off the salesman's attack, I was talked into the new "Droid" phone. This phone is crazy. It's a Hi-tech robot. I can't figure out how to make calls on it. I struggle to navigate the message center to read any texts. I'm actually afraid that it may attack me in my sleep. Droid, you think your smarter than me. Maybe you are. You think your sexier... and that certainly is a possibility. BUT... i shall not be intimidated by you. Tonight, while having a cup of tea, you made a strange noise. I walked over to you... your lights lit up as I got closer. I know you saw what happened next... me diving behind a corner and hiding from you. You probably thought it was out of fear. I assure you, Droid, it was not. It was merely a moment of confusion. Since the beginning of story telling we've all heard the rumors & predictions of robots taking over the earth. Well, not now. Not in my house, Droid. I will patiently, quietly study you. I will show no fear. Soon, I will know you better than you know yourself. After all that, if you still have the upper hand, I'll just toss you into the pacific.

You may be smarter, faster, sleeker & prettier, but I can survive mother ocean... you can't.

Until then, I'll sleep with one eye open...

Let me introduce you to my old friend, Kate Franco... the quilter!

Many moons ago I was living in San Francisco, spending my days & nights writing in coffee shops. It's also the place where my curiosity for photography was born. This is where Kate & I first met. The quintessential SF girl, Kate is creative, fashionable, fun & sweet... not to mention very talented. Forgive me, but when I think of someone quilting I think of an old, frumpy woman sitting next to a fire in a mountain cabin. That would not be Kate... and that is why I was so shocked to see her work.

I LOVE quilts. As a little boy that's all I'd ever cuddle up with (we had many in our family). If you share the same affinity you should contact her for a custom made one. I just ordered one from her myself, so exciting! Sorry... I get emotional about quilts. ;) It's cold in NY right now... it's cold in LA (no, seriously!)... it's cold everywhere. Get yourself a quilt.

I recently shot professional surfer Christian Wach. It was his first shoot & he pretty much kicked ass. Christian is one of the best longboarder's in the world & he's now decided to tackle the modeling world. We went surfing after the shoot and i have to say... it was the first time a model has blown me out of the water. haha. I wasn't even surfing really. I was just sitting on my board watching him rip apart my local break on a twin fin.

That's right, Hurricane Delia hit the Florida Keys. The wrath was too much for most of the local folk so, we pretty much had the place to ourselves. There was lots of picture taking, plenty of rain (but, of course!), hot hot heat, nasty humidity, uncontrollable laughter, pool parties, swim meets, and one single night of painting the town red. The other day while flipping thru old photography books, I started thinking about all of the talented friends I have... surfers, photographers, bookers, painters, etc. and how lucky I am to be surrounded by such amazing people. I've decided that each week I'm going to photograph, write and post about every one of these people (well, time permitting!). So, without further delay let me introduce you to my first entry, my friend Roxy...

Roxanne Saffaie is a super talented makeup artist and a damn good surfer, too. We met a couple years ago and I am soooo glad we did. We've already done some amazing shoots together and have since become great friends. Without Roxy, I wouldn't have met my friends Rochelle & Keala and experienced all of the aloha that the North shore offered me.

There's a warmth to Roxy that only a Hawaii girl can posses. But... she's also an LA girl, a New Yorker & a Euro all rolled into one. Ask any of the other photographers she works with and they'd agree... she knows makeup. She also has some unique tricks up her sleeve (oxygen treatments, etc.).

This past week Courtney a.k.a. "Skiba" a.k.a. Sharapova invited Steph, Lexi and yours truly to the Star Magazine party in Hollywood. Good band, open bar & a rainy Hollywood night... just what the doctor ordered. Oh, and we had photo booth fun too. Yeeow!

MIAMI...

My first trip to Miami was... incredible. Melissa, Jim, David and myself went down there for some location scouting/casting action and ended up having so much fun. I'm not really a 'clubbing' kind of guy so, we didn't do the wild in south beach routine. This trip was about warm water, friends, and sunshine (well, some sunshine).

By random chance, my friend Emilee just happened to be in town at the time. I haven't seen her in years so, it was really nice to catch up with her on a white sand beach.

One night, the Delia's crew & I went to Prime 112 where we had the best steaks ever. Seriously, the best steak I've ever had. Now that I think about it, every meal we had was insane.

The drive down to the keys was beautiful. We were stuck in the car for hours and I think we laughed until we cried the whole way. I came home to LA and couldn't help but think how lucky I am... to have a job I love so much, to work with people that have become my friends and whom I adore. There's a lot to be thankful for.

Back to NY for the Delia's Holiday shoot & back to the woods of Pennsylvania we went. Take a wild guess what happened... it rained! Again! Somehow, we managed to get thru it with some positive little attitudes & some serious scheduling work on Jim's part. It seemed like we all hung out a bit more than normal (or maybe we were just there longer). You wouldn't think staying in the 'Bates Motel' in the back woods would be so fun but, when you've got this cast of characters, crew dinners at little piano bars, coal miners looking skeptically at us (fashionistas, yeoow!) & Kim, our 'unusual, usual waitress'... it's pretty damn fun!

Next shoot: Miami. So, no rain? Yeah, right... "Hurricane Delia" is about to hit...

Yep... it happened. So strange because I have no known enemies aside from the groms that surf my local break (who i will continue to abuse until they grow out of grom-hood).

When someone eggs you, they do it to spite you. Here's the crazy thing... these little hoodlums actually did me a favor because the fact is... I LOVE eggs. I do. I Love them!

I personally believe that eggs smell amazing. And it's a well known fact that they're packed with protein. I love the way eggs look. I even love the lifelong mystery that eggs have given us (was it the chicken or the egg??). I may even make sweet, sweet love to an egg one day.

So... when the rooster crowed, the sun came up & i walked outside to find my vehicle covered in mysterious protein goodness, did I get angry? Nay, I say. I rejoiced. I looked up at the sky and thanked the universe for the little rat bastards that committed this cruel intentioned act. I may never wash my car again.

If you really wanted to upset me you should have thrown Cauliflower at my car. Cauliflower sucks...

Lately the boys & I have been doing lots of night surfing. There's nothing better than surfing in the dark... you can't see shit, there's creepy 'shark vibes' and it's cold. BUT... there's no one out so you get any wave you want, you can hear other surfers hooting at you in the dark and you can catch glimpses of the moons reflection off the face of the waves. Not to mention, I've had a lot on my mind lately & I can't think of a better distraction. This particular night, Stefan, Christian and myself surfed all alone and it was pure bliss. There was a party on the beach right near us and they were blasting music out. Imagine riding perfect waves in the dark with just your friends while listening to Michael Jackson's 'Billie Jean'. I can't give away where we do this but, there's a certain town legend by the name of 'Skeletor' that works at the Jack in the box down the road. Jack in the box at 1am... mmmmmmm.

We just came off a buttery little shoot for the 7 jeans lookbook. Shot at pier59, both Lexie & Talya from Seven were so awesome and chill... which is really helpful when you're on a four day shoot. Nobody wants to work with a jackass cracka for that long! We shot a ton of looks, listened to lots of Biggie (i even made a special gangsta playlist) and ate like kings. The enchiladas... mmmmm. check some photos out...

After showing you the board clutter, I decided to have Christian give us a full tour of the house and offer up some of the daily activities that go on here. Enjoy the tour & welcome to the beach house...

On The front deck, a thumbs up is the standard invite. Here, Christian wears a vintage kitten floral jumper.

Reading is an everyday activity in the living room. Christian dives deep into heavy literature wearing a floral sweater by Classiques Du Sport. Pink pants by Sundance.

This is the western wall in the living room. I keep it blank for shooting. Christian wears a jeweled top designed by himself.

Cooking is important to us at the beach house. We always keep a healthy diet of Watermelon, Coconuts, Banana Pancakes & of course Keystone Light. Here, Christian cooks it up in Vintage O'neill wetsuit.

We're a musical bunch. Here in the living room, Christian plays 'Somewhere over the rainbow' while wearing what God intended.

Always going on surf trips, Christian checks out where we're headed next on the map. Here he wears a banana hammock by Agon Swim with green denim jacket by Speedo.

The last Delia's location shoot was deemed, by me, officially insane. Imagine shooting 3 out of 4 days in the rain (yes, outside). We had people holding umbrellas over models and cameras, rain jackets that make you look like one of those CSI guys and lots of soaked thru shoes. All I can say is... SHIT, how fun? Seriously. And to think that somehow we pulled it off. As time goes on and I shoot Delia's more & more, I realize that something... something quirky will always happen. I'm beginning to wonder if that's why we all have so much fun on these shoots. We're like the Griswold's heading off to Wally World. This shoot was on Long Island at a Naval academy and to add to the quirk factor there were rubber duckies everywhere, a weird lurker dude on set that I dubbed 'Chuck Norris', strange 'noises' coming from the rooms and a hill that we were all dying to roll down. Ahhhh... the adventure continues!

BILLABONG rips up Hollywood

The Billabong Design For Humanity event was sooo fun. Roxy, Christian & I had a little delicious tapas in Hollywood, watched a fashion show, drank good wine & did the robot (wait, no... only Christian did the robot). It's always fun when Keala comes in town.

There's something really cool about partying in Hollywood with nothing but fellow surfers. It's like a bunch of Eskimos hanging out in Fiji. Errr, or something like that.

We met a lot of cool people, heard some good music and in the last fifteen minutes Keala & the girls decided to hit the dance floor. I won't go into what happened next...

My Favorite thing about these kind of nights is the drive home. Windows down, music blaring (but, it's that mellow, end of night music), good friends laughing & the occasional glancing at the moon thru the sunroof.

Nights like these remind you that life is indeed quite good... :)

Most of my friends know that I'm not one to make a big deal out of my birthdays. In fact, I don't even mention it to people anymore. There was a time... many moons ago... when my birthday meant serious partying. There was the time we took over the saddle ranch (oh boy), the venice house/world cafe party, the culver extravaganza... you get the idea. But, once the late twenties started creeping in I was over it. Now it's all about being with my fam & the ones I love... low key.

Anyway, long story short... thanks to Stephanie & Lexi for my lil early B-day surprise! You're both so talented and such good friends. And there's nothing like mixing margaritas & chocolate ice cream cake. with the two of you. :)

Ok... if the Delia's shoot in LA was fun, the shoot in New York was out of this world (and i never even use that phrase). So insane... we got gorgeous shots, laughed our asses off, ate like kings and lived it up. My assistant Clinger flew out with me (and took some great video too) and we just had a blast. I stayed in my usual hood (west village) and we shot in a park about an hour outside of the city. When Jim & Melissa asked where I wanted to do dinner the night I arrived, I didn't hesitate... Pipa. The great Lelle (aka. "Queen of NYC", aka. "The Argentine Bombshell") first introduced me to the place and I've been salivating at the thought of their calamari for months now. You can't beat New York when it comes to food... Pipa, Tea & Sympathy, some place in Brooklyn (Melissa, where'd we eat those amazing burgers?) and about a thousand other places. It seems like every block has the best restaurant.

Anyway, I could go on & on about this trip but... I think I'll share some photos instead. Going back in about a week... maybe it's time I try out the surf on Long Island?

On my last trip to New York I swung by ELLE to see the man, Eddie. Eddie & I did a project for Dior a while back & I have to say, the dude is cooler than a polar bear with an icee. I'm going to start calling him dapper Dan too because he's always flaunting the good threads. There's been a lot of changes @ ELLE since I last shot for them so, it was good to meet the new team there. I started thinking... is everyone at the Mag good looking? Then i caught a glimpse of my reflection in his office and saw that I looked pretty damn good there too. That's when I realized... Eddie has a force field in his office that instantly makes you sexy as soon as you step in the door. God, I need to get that recipe...

So stoked because It seems like they're doing a bunch of stuff that's right up my alley. Plus, they have a really cool logo (check out stateoftomorrow.tv). I don't care how "hip" your company is or how much money you can throw around... if you don't have a good logo, I'm over it. ;) I also have a thing for taking photos of people mid-meeting. I just want to see if they'll kick me out. How cool are Aussies, by the way? I've yet to meet a bad one. Most of them are good surfers, chill people & super fun. Plus, they can protect you while in the Big Apple... I mean, come on... Mick Dundee? Interesting that they're such good people considering they're all descendants of hardened criminals. Oh, snap!

Since I'm about to blog about the big 'back to school' Delia's shoot in NY, I thought I should first throw up some stuff from our first shoot together. LOVE shooting Delia's. The models, the crew, everyone involved... such a blast to work with and there's always so much energy on set.

For this summer shoot all of the Delia's crew came out from New York and we shot at the Santa Monica pier & a house in the area. It was a week long shoot that was so fun... I seriously think we all cried when it was wrapped up.

When you work with people for any real period of time, especially in a creative way, you can't help but feel a sense of 'family'. That's one of the things I love about taking pictures. Yeah, it's about getting the shot (did i just say that? that expression is so lame) but, when you bond & make friends along the way... that's the happiness that stays with you. I know, I know... sappy.
